Boglarka Kiss on flute and Robert Edward Thies on piano performed works by Schumann, J.S. Bach, Szervanszky, and Poulenc. Kiss, a native Hungarian, strives to introduce American works not widely known in Europe, and is regularly featured on Hungarian National Radio. She is on the faculty of Pasadena City College and is a professor of flute and artist-in-residence at Blue Lake Fine Art Camp in Michigan.
Robert, a native son from Palos Verdes, won the Gold Medal in 1995 at the Second International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia, and became the only American to win a Russian competition since Van Cliburn’s famed triumph in Moscow in 1958. Thies is a dedicated chamber musician, performs with orchestras worldwide, and works in Los Angeles with top film composers. Following the performance, Robert and Boglarka charmed us with stories of their romance and musical collaboration as husband and wife.
Thank you to Jacquie Glass for sharing her stunning home, to Hazel Lord and Marge Schmit for hospitality, and to Britton Weber and our 2012 Provisional class of Wanda Dalcin, Britt Huff, Pilar Simmons, and Patricia Zelt for a warm welcome.
